Punk Rock Day of the Dead - in Memphis
Los Angeles, CA – Theresa Kereakes , the veteran punk rock photographer behind the Punk Turns 30 blog and brand unveils a new photo exhibit, UNGUARDED MOMENTS: Backstage and Beyond, showcasing more photos from the Golden Age of Punk Rock.
ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
Debbie Harry & Blondie, Chrissie Hynde, Billy Idol, Joan Jett, the Ramones, Sex Pistols, Belinda Carlisle & the Go Gos are all internationally known popular music icons. Some of them are in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame; they all have gold and platinum records. BUT, in 1977, they were all gritty punk rockers hanging out in night club backrooms with their friends. They wore vintage or home-made clothes and did their own hair and make-up. They partied with each other and punk rockers from other cities, serving as inadvertent good-will ambassadors for the new music. Those "before-they-were-stars" parties, backstage rooms and unguarded moments are presented here, in the UNGUARDED MOMENTS: BACKSTAGE AND BEYOND touring exhibit.
TOUR ITINERARY
The UNGUARDED MOMENTS tour kicks off at the Motel Art Show – One Night Stand at the Ole Miss Motel in Oxford, MS on October 25. In keeping with the Motel theme, Theresa's selection will showcase several never-before-seen images of The Cramps 1978 line-up photographed at the long-gone World Famous Tropicana Motel of West Hollywood, CA, one which touring punk rockers called "Home" while traveling through Los Angeles. The next stop is on November 1 in Memphis, TN and the Goner Records store where a Punk Turns 30 / Unguarded Moments collection befitting the holiday that falls on that date will be shown: Punk Rock Day of the Dead. The Day of the Dead will feature popular Punk Turns 30 images of… dead punk rockers, from The Ramones to Stiv Bators, Johnny Thunders and Darby Crash to the lesser known but equally as photogenic personalities such as Lance Loud, Black Randy, Bruce Gary (The Knack) and Rik L Rik. A weekend in Atlanta, GA is slated for November 16/17.
As they always have been, Punk Turns 30 exhibits are accompanied by live music of the garage / punk variety.
The tour resumes after the Thanksgiving holiday with more dates and venues to be announced shortly.
ABOUT the PHOTOGRAPHER
Theresa Kereakes has been taking pictures for most of her life.
She was a student of English Literature at UCLA when punk rock exploded and she took pictures in stride, not knowing at the time that many of her subjects would become famous, infamous or collectible.
