After reading a story in the NY Daily News about 15 year-old hasidic girls who fled their strict home and Orthodox Community, I have been perusing a blog called Hasidic Rebel. I admit, being from the south, I had no idea what a Hasidic Jew was until I moved to NYC. My first introduction was when I applied for a job waiting tables in the summer of '99. I was doing an internship and needed the extra income. I had an interview with a man that refused to shake my hand. I went back to Mtv, where my internship was, and asked the people I worked with what was up with that. They weren't sure until I mentioned that he looked to be "one of those serious jews from the movies." Then I was told that they don't touch women because they are considered dirty because they menstruate. "Well, what about their wives? What about sex?" I asked. "They use a sheet with a hole in it." OOOOO-KAY.
I like debunking myths, and this has been an eye opening blog. So do they really use a sheet with a hole in it when they have sex? I guess you'll just have to read th blog and find out for yourself.
